Vance vs. Waltz: the Vice President debate

On October 2nd, Vice President candidates JD Vance and Tim Waltz faced off in a debate ahead of the upcoming US Election this November. Unlike the fiery presidential debates from last month, this vice presidential encounter was more policy-oriented, restrained, and civil—well, as civil as American politics can get. A notable moment of camaraderie emerged when Governor Waltz shared a personal story about his son witnessing a shooting at a mall, prompting Vance to express his condolences for the traumatic experience.1

It is up for debate whether Senator Vance was sincere in this regard, as he is well known as a skilled speaker, which gave him an advantage in this debate compared to Waltz, who appeared noticeably nervous.2 While Vance’s polished delivery may have impressed some viewers, it also raised questions about his authenticity. In contrast, Waltz’s more passionate moments revealed his genuine concern for the issues, even if they came across less smoothly. This dynamic created an interesting tension between style and substance, leaving audiences to ponder which candidate truly connected with the pressing needs of the American people.

The common phrase during this debate was “I agree with you… but,” and I think that sums up the exchange perfectly. It highlighted the candidates’ efforts to find common ground while simultaneously emphasising their significant differences. This tactic illustrated their struggle to appeal to a broad audience while staying true to their partisan identities. While both candidates attempted to project a sense of unity, their contrasting views on key issues ultimately underscored the deep divisions within American politics today.

A highlight of the evening came during a heated exchange between Vance and the moderators, after being fact-checked on the legality of Haitian immigrants in Springfield. Vance reacted strongly, insisting that “the rules were you guys weren’t going to fact-check,” leading to a moment where both candidates had their microphones muted to restore order.3

Understanding the vice president’s role is crucial in this context. VPs serve as advisors, carrying out the president’s policy initiatives, often defending views they might not personally endorse. This dynamic was evident in Waltz’s approach to topics he was passionate about—such as healthcare, education, and reproductive rights—where he showcased more strength. In contrast, he struggled with issues like backing Israel. Vance also demonstrated this discrepancy; his rhetoric on climate change starkly differed from Trump’s earlier assertions during the presidential debate.

JD Vance: Born James Donald Bowman, Vance is currently the senator for Ohio, a seat he has held since 2023 and previously served the US Marine Corps between 2003 and 2007. He is a right-wing conservative politician with spoken opposition to abortion rights, same-sex marriage, gun control and weapon support for Ukraine. Vance is married to Indian-American lawyer Usha Chilukuri, and has 3 children.4

Tim Waltz: Current governor of Minnesota and former teacher, Waltz has also served in the US military, in the Army National Guard between 1981-2005. Harris’ running mate has been a left-wing democrat since 2005 when he volunteered for John Kerry’s presidential campaign, and in 2007 became a member of the house of representatives for Minnesota and kept his seat until 2019 where he stepped down and ran for governor instead. Waltz is married to Gwen Whipple, also a former teacher, and has 2 children with her. 5

In the end, many felt that Waltz finished a lot stronger than his opponent, especially in the last 15 minutes where Waltz said “that’s why Mike Pence isn’t on this stage” referencing Trump’s alleged role in the January 6th Capitol riots. Vance avoided this pointed question, highlighting the lingering concerns surrounding Trump and reinforcing the importance of accountability in the upcoming election. This is what many were left with at the end of the debate, a stark reminder of the danger Trump represents, a strong finish in a democratic election. My Opinion on this

Overall, this debate felt like a breath of fresh air, especially after the chaotic spectacles we’ve seen during the U.S. election so far. It was policy-focused, relatively civil, and, dare I say, slightly boring—but that’s exactly how politics should be. The business of running a country shouldn’t resemble a reality show. Our political landscape has veered too far into “strongman leadership,” where personality and likeability take precedence over actual competence. This debate reminded me that maybe we haven’t gone too far to turn back.

What I appreciated most was the absence of aggressive debate tactics. Both candidates were far more focused on their policies than on personal attacks, which was not only more effective but refreshing to witness.

JD Vance, in particular, represents the kind of polished, assertive politician we’ve come to expect. He’s well-spoken, charismatic, and knows how to frame his arguments in a way that makes everything sound just vague enough. Compared to Trump, I can tolerate him being on stage—while I disagree with his views, he at least presents the facade of someone competent.

Tim Waltz, on the other hand, represents the kind of politician I hope to see more of in the future. Although not flawless, he came across as empathetic, passionate, and genuinely sincere. His down-to-earth approach and clear care for the people he represents are qualities we should see more of in our leaders.

Tory Leadership Race Heats Up: Key Speeches at Conservative Party Conference

This week saw a significant revisit to the ongoing Tory leadership election, with the Conservative Party Conference taking place from October 1st to 4th. The conference provided a platform for the four remaining leadership candidates—Robert Jenrick, Tom Tugendhat, Kemi Badenoch, and James Cleverly—to present their visions for the future of the party and the country. Each candidate took the opportunity to make their case to fellow Conservatives, outlining their priorities ahead of the upcoming leadership election. This event has become a crucial moment for the contenders, as it allows them to differentiate themselves on key issues such as immigration, national security, and Britain’s role on the global stage.6

Tom Tugendhat entered the conference as the underdog and focused his speech on national security and Britain’s global position. He stressed the importance of strengthening military and intelligence capabilities in the face of growing international threats. As the Shadow Minister for Security, Tugendhat highlighted the need for Britain to remain resilient against cyber threats and terrorism, calling for more robust partnerships with global allies. While his military background gives him a level of credibility, opinions remain divided on whether his approach resonates with Tory voters or if it leaves him as the weaker candidate in the race.

Robert Jenrick — former Minister for Immigration and a favourite in the leadership race — took a hard stance on border control and immigration policies during his speech. He emphasised the government’s commitment to tackling illegal immigration and introduced proposals for stricter border security measures. However, despite the gravity of his topic, many attendees left the speech feeling underwhelmed, describing it as slow and overly simplistic. It wasn’t a disaster, but certainly not what you’d expect from the frontrunner in the polls.7

Kemi Badenoch, often viewed as a rising star within the party, stayed true to her core message by doubling down on conservative values, free speech, and her opposition to “woke culture.” The former Secretary of State for Business and Trade also pushed for business-friendly policies, advocating for deregulation and innovation to solidify the UK’s leadership in technology and global trade. Her speech appealed strongly to traditional conservatives and even to those leaning towards more extreme ideologies within the party.

James Cleverly, the former Foreign Secretary, delivered a compelling speech that focused heavily on Britain’s post-Brexit role in the world. He laid out plans for expanding trade agreements, strengthening diplomatic ties, and forging new alliances. Cleverly emphasized the need for the UK to stay relevant on the global stage while also tackling domestic issues such as economic recovery and energy independence in the face of rising global instability. His charismatic delivery and sharp humour left many feeling he was the strongest performer of the day, potentially securing him a boost in upcoming votes.

The next crucial date for the Tory leadership election is expected to be October 18th, when MPs will begin another round of voting to narrow down the candidates. With tensions running high, it’s a critical moment for the future of the Conservative Party, and all eyes will be on these candidates as they battle for the top spot. Who will come out on top, and what direction will they take the UK? Only time—and votes—will tell.8

Middle East on the Edge

This week, escalating tensions in the Middle East have reached a dangerous new level, as conflict between Israel and militant groups, primarily Hamas, continues to intensify. The already fragile situation worsened following the assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah on September 27th, which prompted increased involvement from neighbouring countries such as Lebanon, Yemen, and Iran. These nations have ramped up their political and military engagement in the Palestine-Israel war, raising concerns of an even broader regional conflict.9

On October 2nd, Israeli forces launched a new series of airstrikes in response to ongoing rocket attacks from Hamas and other militant factions in Gaza. This response has devastated Gaza, a territory already suffering under a crippling blockade. Civilian casualties are rapidly rising, and critical infrastructure has been severely damaged, with homes, schools, and hospitals among the targets. The humanitarian situation in Gaza is becoming dire, with limited access to medical aid and basic necessities.

A surprise attack on Israel’s southern border, which resulted in the deaths of eight Israeli soldiers, further escalated the conflict. Israel’s retaliatory airstrikes have been met with further rocket fire, as militant groups refuse to back down.

Diplomatic efforts from Egypt and Qatar to broker a ceasefire have so far failed, with no agreement reached between the warring parties. The United Nations, alongside other international bodies, like G7, have urged restraint, but so far, peace talks seem distant as violence spirals out of control.

The fear now is that Iran’s continued support of militant groups like Hamas could draw more countries into the conflict. Already, the region’s volatile state is fueling concerns that the war could spread beyond Gaza, creating further instability. With no immediate end in sight, the question remains: how much longer can this cycle of retaliation and violence continue before it triggers a larger, more devastating conflict across the Middle East? The coming days could prove critical as efforts to avoid a larger-scale war intensify.

Other Global news this week
Rapper P-Diddy (Sean Combs)
120 sexual assault cases filled against American Rapper P-Diddy.

This week, the entertainment world has been rocked by revelations that 120 sexual assault cases have been filed against American rapper and entrepreneur Sean “P-Diddy” Combs. The allegations span over three decades, implicating the mogul in a variety of incidents, including sexual misconduct, assault, and abuse. Many of these lawsuits have been enabled by New York’s Adult Survivors Act, which provides survivors with a one-year window to file cases for incidents that would otherwise be outside the statute of limitations.

The claims range from former employees to women involved with the music icon during his rise to fame. Combs, a significant figure in both the music and fashion industries, has denied all allegations through his legal team. With more details emerging, this case could rival the public fallout experienced by other high-profile figures during the #MeToo movement, potentially leading to severe legal consequences.10

President Claudia Sheinbaum
First female president elected during Mexico’s recent election

Mexico made history this week by electing its first female president, Claudia Sheinbaum, who won with a decisive 56% of the vote. A prominent member of the ruling Morena party and former mayor of Mexico City, Sheinbaum has built a reputation on combating climate change, expanding public transportation, and addressing gender inequality. Her victory marks a significant shift in Mexico’s political landscape, long dominated by male leaders.

During her campaign, Sheinbaum promised sweeping reforms, including tackling corruption, improving public safety, and investing in infrastructure to revive Mexico’s economy. With over 60% of women in the workforce and growing demands for gender equality, her election is seen as a landmark achievement for women across Latin America. Despite this breakthrough, Sheinbaum faces immediate challenges, including surging cartel violence and an economy recovering from the pandemic.11

pro-LGBTQ rally in Tbilisi protesting new bill
Georgia’s Anti-LGBTQI+ Legislation

In a deeply controversial move, the Georgian Parliament passed a new wave of anti-LGBTQI+ legislation this week, sparking outrage both domestically and internationally.

The laws include bans on gender-affirming care for minors, restrictions on pride events, and tighter controls on LGBTQI+ rights to adopt. Human Rights Watch has condemned the measures as a violation of basic human rights, warning that they could have severe mental and physical health consequences for the queer community.

The legislation, passed by a vote of 84 to 55, comes amidst a broader crackdown on LGBTQI+ rights in Eastern Europe, where conservative and nationalist sentiments have been on the rise. Protests broke out in the capital, Tbilisi, as thousands rallied against the laws, clashing with police outside government buildings.12
